Influence what comes next: Applications open for 2027 Nuffield scholarships
Nuffield Australia has today opened applications for its next round of scholarships, inviting farmers and those working in the agriculture industry to explore new ideas, challenge convention and help shape a resilient and profitable future for food and fibre production.
For 75 years, Nuffield Australia has invested in people to build the future of Australian agriculture. Scholars travel, research, challenge assumptions and return from 15 weeks of overseas study, with ideas that strengthen businesses, regions and entire sectors.
Nuffield Australia Chair and 2008 scholar Jane Bennett said the scholarship is widely recognised as the pinnacle of industry-based learning, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for primary producers.
“Through Nuffield, scholars gain access to global networks and perspectives that challenge how we think about agriculture,” Bennett said.
“The experience equips participants with the confidence and capability to explore new solutions and return home from their overseas study ready to lead with purpose.”
The scholarship allows recipients to undertake self-directed research on a topic relevant to Australian agriculture, travelling internationally to collaborate with farmers, researchers, policymakers and industry leaders before sharing their findings back home.
“From paddocks to boardrooms, Nuffield scholars are contributing ideas and leadership that strengthen resilience, sustainability and competitiveness across the sector,” Bennett said.
Around 20 scholarships are awarded each year across a range of agricultural industries. Some scholarships focus on specific sectors or priority areas, while others are open to applicants from across the food and fibre supply chain.
Nuffield Australia is governed by a skills-based board and led by a dedicated management team, ensuring strong governance, accountability and long-term vision.
2024 Scholar Catherine Marriott said the experience has been invaluable at facilitating and enabling the next contributions she and her colleagues will make to Australian and global agriculture.
“It’s a privilege to spend 12 months fully embracing an opportunity like Nuffield. The experience has been nothing short of life-changing,” she said.
Investment in Nuffield Australia supports the development of agricultural leaders and sector-wide innovation, while also contributing to corporate social responsibility and environmental, social and governance outcomes.
Successful applicants will join Nuffield Australia’s respected alumni network, a community of leaders who actively share knowledge and support positive change across Australian agriculture.
Applications close Friday, 8 May 2026. Successful recipients will be announced at the Nuffield Australia National Conference in Darwin on 9-10 September 2026.
