Eligibility criteria, tenure and value for Nuffield farming scholarships

Eligibility

The Scholarships are open to men and women, who are:

  1. Between 28-40 years of age. (Nuffield understands that there may be people outside this age range who would benefit from the scholarship experience. We encourage them to apply);
  2. Citizens of Australia;
  3. Engaged in farming as an owner or manager or an active member of a farming business; and
  4. Intending to remain involved in primary production in Australia.

In making the awards, regard will be given to the value of the experience that the applicant should gain through his or her studies.

All Scholars will be expected to resume residence in Australia after completion of their Scholarship and must write a report of their studies (see scholar’s agreement). This report remains the property of Nuffield Australia and may be published at Nuffield Australia’s discretion. Reports are published at the expense of Nuffield Australia and remain the property of Nuffield Australia.

Tenure

The Scholarships are tenable for four months travel within a period of eight months from original departure. Initially a pre-tour briefing will be held in October of the year selected. The first six weeks being an organised Global Focus Program (GFP) of study, usually comprising visits to New Zealand, Asia, the Americas and Europe. The GFP groups will depart in February 2012, June 2012 and September 2012 with the scholars invited to nominate which tour he/she will participate in, respecting that there is a need for balanced numbers on each tour. Nuffield Australia reserves the right to allocate or limit the places offered in any particular tour. After the GFP, Scholars will undertake their studies at their discretion.

Scholars departing in February will report both in writing and verbally at the Spring Tour in October of the same year (2012). Scholars departing in June or September will report at the Autumn Tour in March the following year (2013).

Value of the Award

An allowance of AUS$29,000.00 will be provided. However, Nuffield will withhold $3,000.00 of this as an assurance on the submission of an approved report.

Scholars will pay for costs associated with the pre-tour briefing, GFP and report presentations from the $A29,000.00 bursary. Nuffield may withhold these funds at it's discretion to cover these costs. Scholars acknowledge that their expenses may ultimately be greater than the bursary, especially if multiple overseas trips are required, exchange rates are unfavourable, or if partners/family decide to accompany them. Scholars will personally cover all out-of-pocket additional expenses.
