Ben TyleyNuffield Australia 2010 scholarship winnerKingscote lobster fisherman Ben Tyley receives the 2010 Lady Southey Scholarship for natural resource management, supported through the Sidney Myer Fund. He will investigate fisheries management and how other fishing industries are managing pollution and carbon trading issues. Ben operates his own commercial fishing business, based in the waters around Kangaroo Island, off the South Australian coast, targeting rock lobsters, king crabs, school and gummy sharks and some scale fish. He plans to visit the US, including the crab industry in Alaska and lobster industry in Maine, as well as the rock lobster industry in South America to research the costs and benefits of marine parks and reserves, and other strategies such as quota management, in rebuilding lobster fisheries.
