Alan Redfern

Nuffield Australia 2010 scholarship winner

Based in northwest NSW, Alan Redfern receives the 2010 Nuffield Scholarship supported by the Grain Growers Association, to investigate groundcover strategies to preserve moisture for cropping.

Alan is a partner with his brothers and father in a mixed farming business on 1600ha near Narrabri, with a self-replenishing beef herd, and irrigated summer and winter cropping including cotton, cereals, oilseeds and legumes and forage crops.

He plans to study farming systems used in other parts of the world, focusing on water harvesting techniques strategies to preserve soil moisture, to help farming systems become more flexible in response to climate change and increasingly volatile markets. Alan plans to visit Mexico, the US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, United Kingdom, France, Germany and New Zealand.
