Nuffield Australia 2010 scholarship winner

Tasmania’s Ian Duthie receives the 2010 Nuffield Scholarship sponsored by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation to study shellfish culture techniques.

Ian is hatchery manager for Spring Bay Seafoods Pty Ltd, an aquaculture company with a 3000ha marine lease of the east coast of Tasmania, which focuses on the sustainable production of mussels and scallops. The company also processes and packages farmed abalone and oysters.

Ian will investigate new technologies being used to establish mussel hatcheries and nurseries to address the shortage of wild spat available for farming. He plans to visit aquaculture operations and research facilities in the US, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Ireland.
