Travelling scholars field report
Posted by: Tracy Lefroy Date: 14 September 2006

The past six weeks have just flown and now all of a sudden my nuffield travels are drawing to an end - it seems bizarre how quickly everything has passed and how soon it is that we are meant to be presenting our findings! my mind is already racing as to how i am firstly going to articulate all i have learned and secondly how i will fit this information in to a short presentation! I can hear uni lecturers saying '3 key points only', sowill have to somehow cram 4 months of learning in to 3 key points!

For everyone with whom I have sporadic at best contact this year - here is a quick fill-in: my independent travels have taken me to kununurra (managed to get one wa trip in there), china, canada, us, italy and the uk. whilst the group travels have been new zealand, china, canada, us, netherlands, france and uk. i am really happy with what i have seen but also pretty aware that there is still so much more out there to be seen.

I am in the last few days of my travels staying with Diana Spellman (UK Nuffield) who is just lovely to spend time with. We have seen some excellent businesses together - from the grower who is value adding to some degree right through to the retailers / chefs who diana also works with. Plus eating the most amazing food (i have no complaints!). It seems that traceability is a no-brainer and that quite stringent guidelines are required for market access to all customers.

Some of the things that I had thought could potentially create a premium avenue for our products are in fact pre-requisites. but enough of that! plenty more of that to come in my report :)

I hope that everyone is well and promise to be in contact more often once my nuffield is done.
